About the Item

A rare, late 18th century Orkney chair constructed from beautifully patinated pine timber, with an unusual and original panelled back - not a later, less-skilled replacement for a damaged straw back, typically seen. Boasting remnants of its original paintwork, iron strapwork to the back and some characterful, historic repairs, this vernacular piece originates from the Orkney archipelago, off the northwestern coast of Scotland. A craft dating back hundreds of years and varying from maker-to-maker - the chair was designed low to the ground to avoid smoke from the open fires, with the winged back providing warmth and shelter from the wild island weather. Scottish, c. 1780.
