About the Item

An extremely rare and elegant cream and green painted armchair of George III period, attributable to the renown firm of Gillows of Lancaster and London. English, circa 1805–10. Truly collectors' item and a rare opportunity to own an outstanding example of desirable design in original condition. Why we like it Retaining most of its exquisite original painted decoration, this armchair has rare and unusually broad proportions for this model, suggesting a special commission. Its appearance, pleasingly softened by time and wear, offers a coveted 'English Country House' look, complemented by the original handmade squab cushion, still in its original 220+ year-old cover which is extremely rare. The original cushion and fabric can be conserved or replaced with material of the buyer's choice. Attribution One of the most successful cabinetmaking firms of 19th-century England, Gillows of Lancaster and London were always in the avant-garde of design and craftsmanship. Their Estimate Sketch Books, preserved in the Westminster Library in London, contain various designs for neoclassical chairs, some intended for painted decoration. The exquisitely carved central medallion in the back tablet is a feature typical of Gillows seat furniture from the early 19th century, including the handsome 'Edwards' pattern chair, supplied to Wilbraham Egerton of Tatton Park, Cheshire, and to Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall, North Yorkshire, around 1811–12 (S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730–1840, London, 2008, vol. I, pp. 216–218).
