About the Item

A Rare George II Walnut Shepherd’s Crook Armchair with Period Needlework English. Circa 1735 A rare and visually striking George II walnut armchair, retaining its period needlework seat and displaying a bold, sculptural design characteristic of the early 18th century. The chair has a distinctive crest rail of strong outline, flowing into a boldly shaped vase-form splat. This is flanked by S-scroll stiles, with shepherd’s crook arms, confidently formed and comfortable in the hand. The arms give the chair its distinctive silhouette and contribute significantly to its presence. The bell-shaped frieze with drop-in seat is covered in period needlework. The chair stands on carved cabriole legs, worked to the knee with shell and pendant scroll carving and terminating on well drwan feet. The scroll-carved knees rise neatly into the frieze. The overall handling of the form, particularly the sculptural back, the assured drawing of the shepherd’s crook arms, and the quality of the leg carving, aligns closely with early London practice and comparable examples attributed to Giles Grendey. The chair retains superb colour and rich, age-patinated surfaces throughout. Dimensions on request
