About the Item

These Anglo-Indian lounge chairs date to the early 1950's and were made in the Mid-Century style. During the British Colonial period and in the two decades after independence, much Indian furniture was made following British or European styles. However, these "Indian Modern" pieces were original designs and simpler and sturdier than their European counterparts. Exquisite native hardwood were used, such as Teak and Rosewood and woven rattan was substituted for upholstery, which grew musty in the humid Indian climate. Lines and details were simple. Over time, Indian craft became very sophisticated and design became more and more creative. Whether the vintage furniture of the period is called Art Deco, Mid-Century or simply "modern", these pieces reflect the new thinking and optimism of a post-colonial democratic society. These teakwood armchairs were made in the early 1950's from solid Teak wood and have been restored and reupholstered. Typically, they were placed around a tea table on an open veranda. The historically British, dark green color was often found in pieces made for colonial offices and it has been retained, as has the black lacquer finish. They are quite sturdy and comfortable. Their scale is small by modern standards, making the chairs ideal for smaller spaces. Despite the trim dimensions, the chairs easily accommodate 6-footers.
