About the Item

Pair of Rare Italian Futurist Lounge Chairs with a stunning and unique form conveying speed and movement and "the future". These Mid-Century Modern armchairs have dramatic appeal and are in the style of the Italian designer, Giacomo Balla whose a central practitioner of Futurism. Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti took elements of this style in the designs of his chairs. Re-upholstery is suggested. Futurism began as an early 20th Century Italian Modernist movement and its goal was to a convey a sense of the future in its works in art, architecture and design. This was done largely by creating a sense of perpetual movement and speed in all works. Concurrently in France, cubism was the dominant force and was also concerned with the relativity of time, fragmentation of images and continual movement. Together both movements formed the basis of Modernism.
