About the Item

Very rare pair of René Malaval armchairs for the Biarritz Casino. France 1950's. These chairs are made of a welded steel base on which the perforated rigitulle structure sits. That structure is made of a backrest and an elegant wavy seat with rolled endings. The pieces used to hang the seat on the bases are positioned differently from one seat to the other. Hence the seat height and pitch is slightly different as can be seen on pictures. These chairs have been sanded and thermo painted using RAL9010 off-white paint. One base has a slightly tilted leg. René Malaval, a welder by trade, had the idea of recycling the ammunition sheet metal plates discarded after the second World War. Thus, from 1945, he used these perforated plates to create, at reduced cost, furniture intended for town planning and mass distribution: benches, trash cans, chairs and terrace tables. This furniture, produced by Bloc Metal, is part of post-war French "Reconstruction" industrial design movement. These chairs will ship from France with base and seat structure dissasembled for safer transportation. They can be returned to either France or to an upstate NY location. Price does not include shipping nor possible customs duties related charges. additional measurements : max inside width 50cm at widest point and 45.5cm at narrower point. Seat height 34cm front to 23cm back.
