About the Item

This striking armchair, model 5003, was designed by Rudolf Wolf for Elsrijk in the Netherlands, circa 1950. Its minimalist and constructivist design features a sleek black steel frame with Bakelite armrests, and both the seat and backrest are covered in foam and upholstered in vibrant red faux leather. Rudolf Wolf (1919–1989) was a key figure in post-war Dutch modernism. After studying architectural and graphic design, he began his career in the lighting division of Philips, eventually transitioning to freelance work in 1948. For a brief but influential 15 years, Wolf designed furniture for Elsrijk before shifting his focus to art, where he created striking works from steel, aluminum, and plexiglass. This armchair represents not only his signature clean lines and functional aesthetic but also the innovation of mid-century modern design. With some signs of age-appropriate wear, including minor fading to the black metal legs and slight rusting, it remains in good vintage condition and is a testament to the enduring appeal of Wolf's work.
