About the Item

Pair of “Crapaud” armchairs in Macassar ebony and Macassar ebony veneer, with a broad arched apron resting on two square-section tapering front legs and two saber-shaped back legs. The rounded gondola-shaped back extends into flat armrests. Upholstered in a fabric by Maison Prelle after a design by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann. Stamped 'dessiné par Ruhlmann, édité par Porteneuve' (designed by Ruhlmann, edited by Porteneuve). Referenced under nos. 10AR and 266NR in the Ruhlmann archives, Musée des Années 30, Boulogne-Billancourt. Provenance: Antonin Rispal, Sierra Collection Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann (1879-1933) was a French furniture designer and interior decorator and one of the most important and influential figures of the Art Deco movement, even considered by some the godfather of French Art Deco. His designs are characterized through elegance and purity of form, made with precious materials and expert craftsmanship, combining luxuriousness with modernity.
