About the Item
The mid-century movement was the organic offspring of modernism. It was rooted in notions of functionality, elegance and simplicity as championed by the likes of the Bauhaus and Le Corbusier. As this armchair shows, furniture created in this period is characterized by clarity in design and extremely high-quality craftsmanship and choice of materials.
The elegant organic lines of the design create a striking silhouette. Its elegant proportions and mohair upholstery provide great sitting comfort. The chair’s seat and backrest are connected by the solid wood structure with sculptural arms that stand out immediately. The craftsmanship is evident at first sight, the wood is sculpted as if it wasn’t a solid material. The curve of the arms is followed by the front legs, resulting in a shape that is similar to the cabriole style. The armrests run down to the very end of the seat and appear to “grab” the seat. The wood sinks into the lush mohair upholstery creating a visually interesting detail. The soft mohair highlights the thickness of the seat cushion and contrasts the smooth surface of the wood. The soft, beige colour of the upholstery in combination with the vivid colour of the wood creates an aesthetic that is perfect to bring a modern touch to any space.
This armchair is a casual, carefree yet elegant product of the mid-century modern movement that continued to prize the romantic idea that good design could change lives for everyone by serving the bodies functionally, and the eyes aesthetically.
