About the Item

Set of Three Spanish Colonial Armchairs, Peru, 18th Century — Provenance Margarida Polak Lara A rare matched set of three Spanish Colonial armchairs from 18th-century Peru, finely carved in dense native hardwood and representing the sophisticated craftsmanship of the Viceroyalty of Peru. These imposing chairs embody the fusion of Iberian Baroque design with the distinctive aesthetics of colonial workshops active in Lima and Cuzco during the 1700s. Each armchair displays a tall and intricately carved backrest with pierced and scrolled decoration crowned by vigorous foliate crests. The arms are gracefully contoured, flowing into robust supports, while the seats rest on boldly shaped cabriole legs terminating in block feet. Decorative stretchers add structural integrity and a sculptural rhythm that enhances the ensemble’s architectural presence. The current chevron-pattern upholstery is a later addition and can be easily re-covered to suit the collector’s preference. Armchairs of this type were traditionally commissioned for elite residences, ecclesiastical use, or official halls, where they conveyed dignity, authority, and prestige. The survival of three cohesive examples together is particularly rare, underscoring their historical and artistic importance. Provenance: Collection of Margarida Polak Lara, São Paulo — a renowned collector of colonial furniture and decorative arts, celebrated for her discerning eye and preservation of culturally significant works. This distinguished set offers collectors and institutions alike a unique opportunity to acquire authentic Spanish Colonial seating furniture of notable scale and refinement.

Pair of 19th Century Brazilian Empire Armchairs in Carved Tropical Hardwood
Located in Rio De Janeiro, BR
Pair of 19th Century Brazilian Empire Armchairs in Carved Tropical Hardwood A striking and authentic pair of Brazilian armchairs from the second half of the 19th century, crafted in richly grained tropical hardwood—most likely jacarandá or another noble native species. Embodying the graceful elegance of the Brazilian Empire period, these pieces combine classical European influence with regional craftsmanship, resulting in a form that is both sculptural and historically evocative. Each chair presents beautifully shaped lines, with gently curved legs and arm supports, and a caned seat restored using traditional methods. The backrests are adorned with finely hand-carved floral and shell motifs, emblematic of the Luso-Brazilian decorative language of the time. The lower splats echo this detail in harmonious proportion, adding refinement and rhythm to the composition. The surface retains a charming, timeworn patina, enriched by subtle wear and age that speak to the authenticity and dignity of these pieces. Their scale and presence make them ideal for use as statement accent chairs in living rooms, salons, libraries, or conservatories. Rare to find in matched pairs, these armchairs would suit both collectors of colonial and imperial Latin American furniture...
