About the Item

Svensk design, “Swedish design”, is unquestionably a conventional and popular branding device, with many companies explicitly promoting their products as examples of god design, or “good design”. But svensk design does not simply represent “good” design made in Sweden, it also projects a powerful, concrete rendering of a sort of essentialized “Swedishness” embedded in objects, such as this pair of armchairs. The main principles of Swedish Modernism centre around minimalism, simplicity and functionalism. These armchairs manage to follow these principles while offering plenty of visually arresting qualities, starting with the defining curved armrests with a curve that runs up to the back thus creating an open, welcoming look. The tufted backseats are adorned with buttons and the upholstery itself can be mentioned among the main decorative elements. The textured fabric highlights the sensuous curvature of the frames, the thick seat cushions and the tapered, wooden legs. The wooden front legs are conical, while the back legs are tapered and slightly bent to assure structural support to the body. The differing legs add visual interest to the design, breaking the otherwise perfectly symmetrical lines of the body. The expert Swedish craftsmanship is clearly visible even under the fabric and in the smooth edges and lines of the wood. The emphasis on the welcoming, round and soft shape paired with the beautiful stained wood and the cosy upholstery, making this pair a beautiful example of svensk design. This expression in particular denotes a way of life, which can be traced in the openness, understated elegance, and high-quality craftsmanship of these chairs. Condition: In good vintage condition.
