About the Item

At a Glance: - Within the world of Scandinavian design, Danish design is often at the forefront. These chairs hail from Sweden, and they were a delight to work on. - Their design exemplifies the transition from Swedish Grace to Swedish Modern design. - Our restoration addressed both the upholstery and their wood frames with the goal of honoring their original design. - Their sculptural wood arms informed the decision to use Linen, another beloved natural material, for the body fabric and accent fabric. In-Depth: Scandinavian design has long been admired for its balance of function, comfort, and sculptural beauty. While Denmark often takes center stage, Sweden produced an equally compelling but distinctly different body of work. In the first half of the twentieth century, Swedish designers developed two remarkable movements: Swedish Grace and Swedish Modern. Swedish Grace drew from Art Deco silhouettes and decorative flourishes interpreted through a refined and restrained lens. Swedish Modern followed as a thoughtful evolution, shaped by a global shift toward simplicity and practicality. When we sourced this pair of Swedish armchairs, we immediately recognized a dialogue between both movements. Their silhouettes combine gentle curves with clean lines, creating a form that feels both graceful and modern. The result is a soft and inviting presence that speaks to Sweden’s unique design sensibility during the 1940s. These chairs have been fully restored in our studio. Their sculpted solid birch arms inspired the direction of the upholstery, as did the chairs’ generous proportions. To highlight their broad and welcoming shape, we selected a heavy woven linen with a horizontal stripe that encourages the eye to travel across the form from every angle. The fabric is accented with tailored piping and hand-set button tufts in a complementary terra cotta linen. The birch arms were refinished to harmonize with the textile palette and sealed in a flat finish that allows the natural feel of the wood to be experienced when seated. This pair offers historical character, sculptural warmth, and contemporary freshness, making them an exceptional addition to any refined interior.

Rare "Grasshopper" Form Accent Chair in Hand-Woven Silk Linen
Located in Stamford, CT
At a Glance: - Rare Mid-Century sculptural lounge chair with a dramatic grasshopper-inspired profile. - Solid white oak frame fully restored and finished in a warm medium brown. - Hand-woven Neeru Kumar Window Weave textile chosen for its subtle herringbone and diamond structure. - Belgian linen piping from Kerry Joyce that enhances the chair’s linear geometry. - A one of a kind statement piece that reads beautifully from every angle. In-Depth: When we source objects for our inventory, we gravitate toward pieces with a clear place in design history or those with an attractive presence and timeless lines. It is rare for us to encounter a chair that cannot be definitively identified or matched to a comparable reference during our research. When this does occur, and we find ourselves captivated yet without a verified provenance, the answer is always to acquire the piece for our collection. This chair is one of those discoveries. We believe it to be a rare, possibly one of a kind, grasshopper-form accent chair that we had the pleasure of restoring in its entirety. We were so taken by its sculptural frame that we approached the restoration with complete conviction. Our goal was to preserve the integrity of the design while selecting materials that enhance its timeless character. The dramatic z-form arms were originally finished in black paint. Once stripped, they revealed white oak with a beautiful grain pattern that we enriched with a warm medium brown stain. To complement and celebrate the inherent geometry of the frame, we turned to the Pat McGann...
