About the Item

This rare Thonet Model K411 cantilever armchair, produced around 1930, is an important example of early Bauhaus Modernism and one of the first tubular steel armchairs manufactured in serial production in Germany. Developed by Thonet-Frankenberg in collaboration with Walter Knoll, the model represents the transition from handcrafted furniture to industrial modern design. The chair offered here belongs to the early first series, distinguished by its curved wooden side panels, a feature later omitted in subsequent versions. These elements introduce a warm material contrast to the chrome-plated tubular steel frame and underline the Bauhaus idea of combining industrial innovation with traditional craftsmanship. The freischwinger (cantilever) construction provides exceptional seating comfort, further enhanced by the generously upholstered cushions. During a high-quality restoration, the chair was reupholstered using traditional spring-core techniques. The selected textile features a period-appropriate 1930s Bauhaus-inspired pattern, closely aligned with the chair’s original historical context. Due to its early production date, rare configuration, and outstanding comfort, the Thonet K411 is highly sought after by collectors of Bauhaus and early Modernist furniture.
