About the Item

Fantastic vintage modern Herman Miller slat back armchairs comprised of brown mahogany finished wood frames with slat backs and their original burnt orange chenille seats, a pair. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There are a couple nicks in the wood frames that have been touched up. And the front part of the fabric seats show a little wear which makes them look like it is a distressed chenille. We love it. Some may wish to recover. We have priced accordingly. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, August 1986. My oh my…. Isn’t Herman Miller furniture Fabulous??? And just classic no matter the design or the designer. We certainly think so, and this vintage pair of armchairs is no exception!! They are comprised of wood frames with a gorgeous brown mahogany finish, sculpted curved slat seat backs, and they wear their original burnt orange brushed chenille fabric. Herman Miller magnificence!! They are sturdy, comfortable, have a timeless design, and they are versatile enough to go in any room. We can just see them flanking the fireplace in the study or as captain’s chairs at your dining table. They would be perfect used as extra seating in your living room but would be equally as fabulous in your bedroom, sitting room, or home office. Possibilities are endless!! Herman Miller started life as Star furniture Co. in Zeeland, Michigan in 1905 a producer of high-quality furniture. Becoming Michigan Star Furniture Co in 1919, and then in 1923, when long time employee Dirk Jan De Pree and his father-in-law purchased 51% of the company stock, it was renamed Herman Miller Furniture Company. And remained so until the 1960s when it became Herman Miller, Inc. Until the 1930s they produced only traditional wood furniture, but the Great Depression caused a need for change, and they hired modernist Gilbert Rohde who took the company in a new successful direction. Upon Rohde’s death in 1944 he was replaced by none other than the renowned George Nelson. Working with the likes of not only Charles and Ray Eames but Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Girard, and Robert Propst, to name just a few, Nelson led Herman Miller to became one of the finest names in furniture and design. This pair of club chairs is ready to be your new favorite vintage pieces and make a bold statement in any room you choose! Harvey Probber was born on September 17, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York. He began his love for furniture early and while attending high school he took a part-time job in a used furniture store and was inspired to try his hand at drawing ideas for furniture. Probber sold his first sofa design when he was just 16, for $10. After high school graduation, he accepted a job as designer for Trade Upholstery which was a small manufacturing facility. The 1940’s was the beginning of American modernism, a time characterized by young designers with talent, initiative, and a willingness to take risks with new ideas. Probber was one of an early band of pioneer designers in a field that included iconic names such as D.J. DePree of Herman Miller, Hans Knoll, Georg Tanier, and Jack Lenor Larsen. Probber established Harvey Probber, Inc., in 1945 and in the mid years of the twentieth century, Harvey Probber became one of America's leading designers. He favored exotic woods, highly polished lacquer, hand-rubbed finishes, and extravagant upholstery fabrics. In little over a decade, Harvey Probber, Inc. became one of the country’s leading contemporary furniture firms. His most significant design breakthrough was his modular seating concept. It was the first of its kind. He also introduced the “sling chair” and “nuclear furniture” which could be clustered and had interchangeable pieces. By the 1970s, Harvey Probber, Inc. had opened trade showrooms in major design centers across the country. His work was awarded two "Best of Neocon" Gold Awards from the Resources Council of the Institute of Business Designers for the Houston Chair...

Modern Pair of Black and Walnut Tone Wood Accent or Dining Armchairs by Haworth
By Haworth
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome pair of walnut tone wood accent or dining armchairs with black wool-like fabric upholstery. They are in wonderful original condition. The fabric is nearly perfect. The walnut stained, we believe ash, wood does show signs of age and use but nothing outstanding. There is wear to the stain on the arms where hands have rubbed. We call this patina. Please see photos, circa 1996. Here is a wonderful pair of little black chairs that can go everywhere. Just like that little black dress. This handsome set is made by Haworth Wood Seating of High Point, NC, circa 1996. Most likely they began life in an office setting, but this beautiful modern and sleek pair of chairs would enhance most any living space where you need a couple more places to sit. Or they would be fabulous host and hostess chairs at your dining table mixed with a myriad of other design options. Or place them at a small table for two...
