About the Item

Vladimir Kagan tripod armchair for Weiman, black leather, USA, 1980 The Vladimir Kagan armchair for Weiman embodies an avant-garde approach to mid-century modern design. This armchair showcases Kagan's signature style, where form meets function in a bold, sculptural manner. The design features dramatic arches that extend into the armrests and front legs, creating a fluid, continuous silhouette. The flat three-legged base seamlessly connects to the backrest and armrest, highlighting a sense of spatial continuity. Crafted entirely in black leather, the armchair has a minimalist yet impactful aesthetic. The cushioned seat ensures comfort, while the slender backrest and elegantly curved arms add sophistication. Tone-on-tone stitching accentuates the armchair's structural flow, highlighting refined details such as the single armrest that subtly tapers toward the opposite side, resembling a comma in form. This design element enhances the visual rhythm, creating a dialogue between the armchair and its surrounding space. Born in 1927 in Germany, Vladimir Kagan moved to New York in 1938, opening his own shop in 1948 and later partnering with Hugo Dreyfuss in 1950 to launch a dedicated furniture showroom. Many of his armchairs remain rare finds, as their sculptural forms resisted mass production, making them highly coveted by collectors and design enthusiasts alike. Influenced by everything from antiques and nature to the Bauhaus, Kagan’s style masterfully balances comfort, functionality, and artistry. His clientele included names like Walt Disney, Marilyn Monroe, General Electric, and General Motors. We accurately check the quality of every object.
