About the Item

armchairs in wicker and brushed steel, designed by Mats Theselius Manufactured by Ikea PS, ca 2000. Price per chair, up to six chairs available. Swedish designer Mats Theseöius is well reknown for his extravagant furniture. His interior designs and various projects have earned him great reputation in the fields of furniture design, ceramics and fine arts. In his designs he finds new details or solutions for „traditional“ furniture. His great talent is the „transformation“ of the materials used in his furniture, that get transcended into patterns and structures, that become accentuated. For the Näton armchair Mats Theselius collaborated with famous Swedish mass-furniture producer IKEA. The „Näton“ was introduced into the market in lkea’s PS series. Beginning in the mid 1990ies Ikea invited designers to realize furniture going beyond their regular products. The manufacturing processes and capabilities of a worldwide furniture retailer became available for the designers. Today the Näton armchair has become one of the collectible Ikea items. It certainly is one of the most pleasent designs in IKEA’s history it’s surprising that the the „Näton“ was not realized in higher numbers. Made from rotin and wicker „Näton“ is a recombination of traditional and new design elements. Where classical wicker chairs were made of wicker only, Mats Theselius uses brushed steel parts that add a supporting structure and us bound with very convincing details. A wire-weaving beautifully binds the steel support to the rotin structure, the chairs glides either are from brushed steel. Mats Theselius here explicitly shows the construction of the chair while the parts perfectly correspond to the whole. These details are what makes the design of this armchair extravagant and improves esthetic of traditional wicker furniture. The chairs are in good to very good vintage condition with signs of use appropriate to age and wear. Please see pictures.
