About the Item

Iconic pair of so called 'Safari' chairs designed by Wilhelm Kienzle in 1928 and manufactured by Wohnbedarf, Switzerland 1950s. These chairs have solid oak wooden frames and beautiful natural leather seats and arms. These chairs have a stunning patina from several years of usage, it adds character to the chairs appearance and makes them unique as well. The chairs are in very good fully original and untouched condition. They can be fully and easily dis assembled for easy and safe shipping or storing. The design is from the late 1920s but these specific chairs were produced in the 1950s. The chairs are priced and sold in a set of 2. Wilhelm Kienzle was a Swiss interior designer and industrial designer, he completed a carpentry apprenticeship in Basel and learned the metal craft before he founded his own design office in Munich in 1908. He staid for longer perios in Rome and Paris, after that he worked in 1914 together with Peter Behrens at the AEG in Berlin. As a furniture designer, Kienzle was extremely versatile and created many different pieces of (industrial) design. The safari chair is perhaps one of the most iconic design in his portfolio. Especially in that time, the design was very progressive, and its probably the reason why this design got popular in the 1950s and 1960s.
