About the Item

One of Yrjö Kukkapuro's iconic chairs and one of the earliest creations in his Post-Modern style that started in the 1980s with his experiment chairs. This chair, named Pilvi (Cloud) and also nicknamed Clown due to it's playful and colourful appearance was design for the Lahti city theater in 1983. The chair is rare and was never produced commercially except for the Lahti theater and a couple of other public places. The chair features a colourful combination of bent wood, fabric and metal. It also has one arm rest which was added by utilizing a left over peace after the cutting of his plano chair that was produced in the 1970s. A brilliant playful and much sought after design chair. The original fabric has a couple of minor stains. Due to its collectability we decided to leave it as is, even though replacing the fabric is a minor reupholstery process. Born in Vyborg in 1933, Yrjö Kukkapuro has ascended to the pinnacle of international design. Discovered as a young talent during his studies at the Art Institute, Kukkapuro's career spans over 60 years, during which he has designed numerous chairs, many of which are featured in museum collections worldwide. Notable classics still in production include the Ateljee, Remmi, and Moderno series, as well as the iconic Karuselli lounge chair, which began its global journey in 1964. Kukkapuro is also renowned for his office and auditorium chairs, with tens of thousands sold globally. Kukkapuro's design philosophy revolves around the three E's: ergonomics, aesthetics, and ecology, with sustainable quality at its core. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate and received prestigious accolades such as the Valti Award, the Kaj Franck Design Award, and the Lunning Prize. Sadly we just heard that Yrjö Kukkapuro died on the 8th of Febraury 2025. According to his daughter he worked all the way up to the end.

By Boman OY
Located in Helsinki, FI
A pair of elegant armchairs designed by Carin Bryggman for Boman Oy in Finland in the 1950s-1960s. The chair bodies are in original and very good condition. The upholstery has been changed at some point. The chairs are compact in size compared to other sizable Finnish armchairs, and are extremely comfortable to sit in. They can be put in living rooms, bedrooms, or even balconies since they don't take much space and can be easily moved single handedly, for they are light to carry. Carin Bryggman (1920-1993) was a Finnish designer and architect, who in addition to designing furniture designed the interiors for many of her projects. The daughter of another renowned Finnish architect Erik Bryggman...
