Graceful, charming, and richly detailed, this 19th century French Louis XV style painted and parcel gilt cane bench, circa 1880s, comes from Uzès, an elegant medieval town in the Gard region celebrated for its refined provincial craftsmanship. Furniture from Uzès often blends the softly aged warmth of the South of France with the sculptural curves of Parisian Rococo design — an irresistible combination beautifully embodied in this bench. Having a gently worn painted finish, the bench features a scalloped apron adorned with giltwood shells and acanthus leaves, hallmark Louis XV motifs rendered with expressive French flair. The graceful cabriole legs, with additional giltwood acanthus carvings, flow into an elegant curved serpentine stretcher centered by a carved floral medallion, a detail that brings a sense of movement and artistry to the piece. The long, gently contoured seat retains its original woven cane, mellowed to a warm honeyed tone that complements the painted and gilded frame.
