About the Item

Born in 1950 and educated at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, Bas Pruyser designed school furniture and ranges of tables and chairs for Dutch manufacturer Ahrend. Funnily, Pruyser drew his biggest succes from his designs for the waste management group Bammens. His work included the design of the iconic yellow waste paper bins, which are still on view on every Dutch street corner today. Pruyser’s best design for Ahrend is without a doubt the no. 600 Museum Bench, especially designed for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The clean lines and joinery of this bench resemble the works of Jean Prouvé and Friso Kramer, yet it is very unobtrusive: when put in a gallery it does not distract from the works of art on the wall. The listed museum bench is in a wonderful pre-owned condition, with wear consistent with age and use. The bench can by fully disassembled to fit a flat pack an can be re-upholstered quite easily. Set of 4 Galvanitas Oosterhout NV S16 Compass Chairs, Dutch Design, 1950s
By Galvanitas
Located in CULEMBORG, GE
For sale is a lovely set of four Galvanitas S16 Compass Chairs, arguably the most iconic school chair ever produced. The first to design with sheet metal was obviously Jean Prouve, but in The Netherlands the experiments with these classic compass leg subframes really exploded in the 1950s. Friso Kramer and Wim Rietveld designed the similar looking Result Chair for Ahrend in the same period, but the S16 turned out to be the most successful —featuring in most schools and canteens of office- and government buildings. Made from a sheet steel frame with a fine laminated and formed seat and back by Pagholz, the iconic S16 Chair...
