About the Item

This hand-carved, bobbin-turned bench is an unusual example of its kind. It has a naive quality exemplified by its asymmetrical frame, one side curving out in the manner of a recamier. The back of the bench, with its vertical railings divided by two wavy horizontal stretchers, brings to mind an abacus. The old dry and encrusted surface speaks to its years of long use. Like an eccentric older relative, this bench will add depth and story to any room. This unique piece once resided in the studio of the American artist Philip Pearlstein, and appears in a number of his paintings.
