About the Item

The ‘pin sofa’, or stick sofa, is among the most recognisable models of Scandinavian mid-century benches. The ‘stick bench-sofa’, a design that has been a crucial model alongside its famous counterpart, the 'stick chair', reached its peak during the 20th century, particularly in the vibrant decades between the 20s and 50s. Today, this iconic piece is experiencing a renaissance, a witness to the enduring appeal of understated, simple design. It stands as a proud example of traditional craftsmanship, its solid wooden joints highlighting the skill and artistry of its makers. This method of construction not only enhances the bench's structure but also presents the reverence it rightfully deserves. This stick bench evokes extremely positive associations: a cosy home, a visit to a grandparent, or a traditional kitchen. What made – and still makes - this bench so popular is probably the invitation to socialise within the space, conveyed through a stylish shape and its simple functionality. This bench has fourteen symmetrically-arranged wooden beech spindles that slightly incline backwards, providing a comfortable seating experience. With a wider wooden backrest rail framing the slim spindles, this model has a beautiful and warm look. The teak seat is perfectly smooth, and the tapered legs follow the practical simplicity of the pins on top. The ‘stick sofa’ is a ubiquitous classic that does just as well in the living room, dining room or even the hall, drawing every eye to it. This model is a testament to the preservation of time-honoured traditions. Its design is a classic that goes beyond trends, a product of a deep-rooted desire to showcase impeccable craftsmanship and a stylish aesthetic without compromising on the quality of production or materials. This ‘stick bench’ is not just a piece of furniture, but a symbol of enduring quality and timeless appeal, a testament to the skill and dedication of its makers. Condition: In good vintage condition. In the past year, seating benches have become a popular choice in home décor. Of course, these benches’ primary purpose is to provide a convenient and comfortable place to sit. However, a bench, such as this beautiful wooden model, can also be used as an interior decorative element. All major interior design companies have released their own bench models, but it is hard to live up to the wooden pieces created in the mid-century. This oak bench is dominated by two elements: its material and the master joinery techniques. Without a doubt, the mortise and tenon...

The term brutalism — which derives from the French word brut, meaning “raw” — was originally coined to describe an architectural style that emerged in the 1950s featuring monumental buildings, usually made of unornamented concrete, whose design was meant to project an air of strength and solidity. Similarly, in furniture design Brutalism inspired designers to create models with the same look of strength and style. This Jean & Sébastien Touret...
