About the Item
This charming bench from the early 20th century comfortably seats three and combines the proportions of Western furniture with the decorative opulence of Qing-dynasty designs. Crafted of elm with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the three-person bench features a slatted back with inset carvings, low arm rails, a solid wood seat and straight corner legs.
The long bench delights with a decorative detail everywhere you look. Vertical spindles along the back are enclosed by a chain of coins, surrounded by low-relief carvings finished with colorful lacquer and flecks of mica. The arms are carved with geometric meanders and scrolled ends, elevated by vertical supports shaped as a double gourd, a symbol of health, and a basket of flowers, a symbol of longevity. And the waisted rectangular seat is adorned with an openwork apron of simple scrollwork, braced by carvings of delicate blossoms.
