About the Item

An early burnt bamboo and cane chinoiserie Brighton Pavillion armchair, bench, or settee with woven cane seat. A rare find, this timeless long armchair has a split frame and long upright back. It features intricate inset geometric and foliate bamboo openwork on each side, and down swept arms. The bamboo it is created from is known as "burnt bamboo" or "Tortoise Bamboo" as it is a mixture of brown and black. The seat is trapezoidal and created from cane webbing which is in excellent condition. History: In the 1600s, England set up trade with China and India. To the English, the "East" represented all that was mysterious and exotic. First with ceramics, silks, and spices, then soon with furniture and wallpaper. (And of course tea In the 1700s) Brighton Pavillion style is named after the estate of the same name located in England and was once the home to the Prince Regent and later George IV. It is believed that the Brighton Pavillion style grew from a gift of Chinese wallpaper that was given to George IV. He planned to use it to decorate a single room in his Brighton estate. As he began decorating with the help of John Nash, this new design concept spilled over into the other areas of the estate. From rugs and lighting, and even to furniture. This chinoiserie style continued until the 1820s and inspired many pieces of Brighton-style furnishings. And soon many fine homes in Europe began to incorporate the Brighton Pavillion style. Wear consistent with age and use. Excellent vintage condition. Age-appropriate wear. Small scuffing in some areas. Seems to be one small repair or reinforcement to one of the arms. (Looks to have just been glued.).

A decorative and well presented 19th Century Jacobean renaissance carved oak three seater high back bench settee. A superb quality piece with ornate arched back and cane inset panels. A lovely contrast with dark, almost ebonised wood frame, and light coloured cane seating. Gently curved arms, which are very inviting, are typical of this style. The bench sits on eight legs, all connected by their original turned stretchers with additional decorative arched mounded stretchers to the front. A good sized, well proportioned piece with generous seat. The three seat design provides a lovely balanced and symmetrical feel to the piece. Seat height = 46cm / 18" The piece is in excellent condition, there are a couple of historic repairs to the arched tops (see photos) but these are well made repairs and are in-keeping with the piece.
