About the Item

A refined and highly versatile Danish Modern bench designed by master cabinetmaker Frederik Stærmose, executed in the 1940s. Crafted from beautifully patinated solid Bangkok teakwood, this elegant piece features finely detailed handwoven cane back panels and subtle brass finials, exemplifying the understated luxury and exceptional craftsmanship of early Danish modern furniture. The bench is designed with loose upholstered seat cushions in a striped textile. When the cushions are removed or rearranged, the bench transforms seamlessly into a side table or low console, revealing the smooth teak surface beneath—an intentional and highly functional design detail that speaks to Stærmose’s mastery of form and utility. The slender turned legs, precise joinery, and balanced proportions reflect the high standards of Danish cabinetmaking of the period, while the cane panels add warmth, texture, and lightness to the overall design. The bench is in original condition and shows some signs of wear but without any structural damages. Marked underneath with metal plaquette. Frederik Stærmose (1883-1969) was a notable Danish master cabinetmaker and furniture manufacturer known for producing high-quality, classic Danish Modern and Mid-Century Modern furniture, often collaborating with designers like Villy Sørensen, resulting in elegant pieces from the 1940s-1960s, such as elm wood sideboards and sculptural oak lounge chairs, prized for their craftsmanship and timeless design.
