About the Item

Elegant 19th-Century Brazilian Empire Bench with Cane Seat and Rare Provenance A refined and architectural 19th-century Brazilian bench, exquisitely crafted in solid tropical hardwood and gracefully evoking the late Empire and Regency stylistic traditions. This striking piece features bold, scrolled arms carved from two blocks of wood, curving into elegant volutes that anchor its commanding silhouette. The tapering saber legs add visual lightness and neoclassical balance, while the newly restored seat features a meticulously woven plastic wicker—sympathetic to the original function, yet resilient and practical for contemporary use. The piece remains structurally sound and beautifully patinated, having aged with dignity over the decades. Of special note is a removable wooden back bar, discreetly added in the 1950s by a previous owner to create a backrest (please see the pictures). Importantly, this addition caused no damage to the original structure and can be reinstalled or left aside according to the collector’s preference—offering flexible styling options as a daybed, bench, or settee. With its sculptural form, balanced proportions, and versatile functionality, this bench embodies the best of Brazilian Empire furniture—where European influence meets local craftsmanship. It would serve as a sophisticated statement piece in an entrance hall, end-of-bed setting, or refined living room. A rare survivor from Brazil’s imperial period, it speaks to a legacy of elegance and taste.
