About the Item

An Empire mahogany and parcel-gilt bench, with X-shaped frame in the neoclassical taste. Dating from the first quarter of the 1800s, and most likely French in origin. Similar stools are illustrated in "Neoclassicism in the North", placed in the Yellow Salon of Rosendal, Crown Prince Carl Johan's summer Palace. The upholstered seat with removable loose cushion, flanked by a pair of rails with turned stretchers ending in gilt roundrels. The X-shaped frame with gilt accents and turned stretcher, resting atop gilt paw feet.
