About the Item

The so-called ‘stick’ sofa has been around throughout the history of the popular “stick chair” and has had its peaks during the 20th century, especially the 1920s and 50s. Recently, the stick sofa started enjoying a renaissance thanks to the returning appreciation of understated, simple design. This no. 145 is a classic model that was designed by Ebbe Wigell in 1952 for Wigells Stolfabrik. This “pinnsoffa” or stick sofa “Florida no. 145” is among the most recognisable models of Swedish mid-century benches. As the name suggests, this bench is referred to as a sofa in Swedish, which is also true for its use. The stick sofa is a Swedish classic that does just as well in a living room, dining room or even in a hallway. This type of sofa used to belong in almost every Swede’s home for quite simple reasons. What made – and still makes - it so popular is probably above all, its stylish shape and simple functionality. The proportions are well-thought-out and designed perfectly to serve its use whilst adding a warm and cosy look to any interior. The “Florida” has twenty symmetrically arranged “pins” that bend outwards and form the curved backrest, with a wider wooden top that frames them. The seat is perfectly smooth and curves gently towards the front to provide sitting comfort. The tapered legs follow the effective simplicity of the pins on the top, and add horizontal lines to the design in the form of four stretchers. Wigells Stolfabrik has been manufacturing wooden chairs, wooden tables and the popular “Florida” bench for more than 150 years. Everything is made in Småland, where they create each model with great experience and craftsmanship. At Wigells, there is a clean emphasis on the highest quality wood and the effort to keep the traditions alive. “Florida” is a classic that will never go out of date, because Ebbe Wigells created it with fervour rooted in craftsmanship and design, without compromising on the quality of the production or the material.‎ Condition: In good vintage condition.
