About the Item
This bench designed by Jan de Jong for the chapel of Carehome Olmenhof in the Netherlands in 1965, this rare hardwood bench is an exceptional example of the formal clarity and serene materiality that define the Bossche School. Executed with impressive weight and precision, the bench combines monumental presence with an intimate human scale.
The surface features a light whitewash finish that highlights the natural grain of the wood and softens its mass. This subtle chromatic intervention was most likely developed together with Wim van Hoof, the artist who collaborated closely with De Jong and Dom Hans van der Laan on interior color schemes for their architectural projects. The surface treatment creates a quiet luminosity that enhances the proportions and form of the piece.
Characteristic copper nails, used both structurally and decoratively, punctuate the horizontal boards with a rhythmic precision that underscores the bench’s construction. The form is rigorous yet calm, with the angled base and high back creating a sense of enclosure appropriate to its original chapel setting. The bench remains in very good original condition, showing a gentle, even patina that adds depth to its surface.
Jan de Jong, one of the most prolific figures of the Bossche School, played a central role in transforming the theoretical principles of Dom Hans van der Laan into a built language. While van der Laan developed the Plastic Number and its proportional system, De Jong translated those ideas into architecture and furnishings with exceptional sensitivity. Their collaboration shaped a unique moment in Dutch modernism, and pieces like this bench are rare witnesses to that vision.
