About the Item

Very nice so called 'Oxford' sofa designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his own company l'Atelier, Brazil 1970. These chairs are made with a chrome-plated tubular structure, leather straps, and comfy padded seats. The frame has a horizontal stem supported by three legs and the seat and back are held by a bent tubular steel piece where the leather straps are attached. They're upholstered in a brown soft premium leather that sometimes has a bit of a greener tone. The chairs are in great condition with minimal wear from age and use. The sofas even still have tags from their previous locations and buildings attached to the frames. The design is really cool and minimal which never gets old. We have 2 sofas available but kindly note that they are priced individually. Celebrated for his sleek designs, but yet very intriguing approach to form, Zalszupin’s work captivates a great part of the Modernist movement in Brasil. After graduating in architecture at the École des Beaux Arts in Bucharest, Romania in 1945, he moved to Paris where he didn’t find the opportunities he was hoping for. These series of events in war torn Europe, and led him to look for a new life abroad the European continent. Just as many other immigrants coming to the Americas from all over Europe seeking fortune, the young polish man originally from Warsaw, Poland named Jerzy Zalszupin was no exception. Arriving in Rio de Janeiro by ship in 1949, and determined to make his mark, he began working with another Polish architect called Luciano Korngold in São Paulo. After opening his Sao Paulo studio, called L’Atelier in 1951, Zalszupin mainly created furniture and a few residential projects. As time went by his label now called ‘Zalszupin’ gained, and later on became closely involved with Oscar Niemeyer’s vision for the new capital of Brasili, in which he had a great part in Niemeyer’s architectural commissions, furniture and interior designs. Read more…

Mario Bellini Quartet sofa Cassina Italy 1964
By Mario Bellini
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Extremely rare 932 'Quartet' sofa designed by architect Mario Bellini and manufactured by Cassina in Italy in 1964. Very early model made up of five separate pieces. It's quite challenging to come across one in this large and impressive size. What makes it even more special is its gorgeous cognac colour. This sofa's modular design means you can arrange its elements in various ways to suit different settings. It's still in good original condition, considering its age, with some expected wear and tear that adds character and enhances its beautiful appearance and patina. There are no holes or tears in it. In the 1960s Mario Bellini reinterpreted the concept of classic furniture stuffing with the 932 model, transforming the padding of the traditional armchair into an item of furniture: four independent cushions connected by a belt passed around the outside. Bellini took as his starting point Le Corbusier’s Grand...
