About the Item

This late 19th / early 20th Century rustic wooden bench likely originated from Northern China. This primitive wooden bench or narrow console table has a single plank top and angled splayed legs. The A-frame design is extremely characteristic of Chinese countryside benches used in homes, workshops, and communal spaces. The very utilitarian joinery matches Chinese rural furniture made for function rather than ornament. The wood appears to be northern elm (Yumu) used extensively in North China. The dry, matte, sun-worn finish is common in agricultural stools and benches.
