About the Item
In the Sculptural Bench, carved from wood, layers are applied in the finishing phase, where the impregnation of deep reddish-black pigment and hand-brushed lacquer, applied layer by layer, gives the work its intensity. With each layer brushed by hand, the satin lacquer reveals the hand-carved details. The solid wood is then juxtaposed with the translucent glass volume.
The series ‘Layer over Layer’ by Linde Freya Tangelder reflects the diversity of materials she interconnects: carved wood, cast white bronze, sheet metals, and glass. As each piece is observed, it becomes clear that they are “layered” in yet another sense. The works are based on the idea of assembling layers within a single material, gradually shifting through transitions into a different materiality.
Layer over Layer Sculputural Bench was part of the performance Exhibition "The Theater of Things" the show transformed the gallery into a domestic stage — an ever-evolving space shaped by the creative voices of seven designers. Each night, one of them slept in the space. Each morning, a journalist, curator, or critic joined for coffee and conversation — exploring what it means to live among collectible pieces.
Inspired by radical gestures like Gianni Pettena’s La Casa all’Elba and Joseph Beuys’ Coyote performance, the exhibition is both lived experience and open dialogue.
