About the Item

A rare and impressive "Slab" form bench by the master of the American Studio Furniture movement, George Nakashima. This piece features a massive, single-slab top of American Black Walnut, celebrated for its dramatic "free" or "live" edge that preserves the natural silhouette and spirit of the original tree. This low-profile piece is supported by Nakashima’s signature structural base, featuring two sculpted, arched walnut legs joined to the slab with traditional tenon joinery. Solid American Black Walnut throughout. The wood exhibits rich grain patterns, including natural knots and sapwood highlights typical of the New Hope studio’s finest selection. Reflects Nakashima’s "soul of a tree" philosophy, where the wood’s natural flaws are integrated into a functional, modernist masterpiece.
