About the Item
Najla El Zein [Lebanese, French b. 1983]
Distortion, 10, 2018
Fiber reinforced resin concrete
Measures: 20.25 x 74.5 x 19.75 inches
51.6 x 189 x 50 cm
Najla El Zein’s artworks explore the relationship between form, use, space, and emotion. El Zein’s approach is rooted in her personal observations and experiences as she stresses the importance of expression through creation. “Design has been a way for me to dissect and analyze every emotion, every thought, every impression, putting a form to it, test it, touch it, get closer to it. Physically making it to be experienced the way I had experienced it,” she states.
Born in Beirut in 1983, El Zein moved to Paris at the age of two where she studied at the École Camondo, receiving a BA in Product Design and a MA in Interior Architecture and Spatial Design. Upon graduation, she worked in the Netherlands before relocating to Beirut in 2011.
Her first solo exhibition, Transition (2019) marked the debut of three bodies of work that acted as varied embodiments of El Zein’s personal journey: Distortion, Fragmented Pillar and Seduction. The communicative power of these series conveys not just the complexity, but also the fundamental importance of human connection by exploring themes such as the unconscious, sensuality, femininity and desire.
Her work has been exhibited at numerous public institutions, including recently at the Dallas Museum of Art’s exhibition Women + Design: New Works (2018-19). El Zein’s pieces have been acquired for the permanent collections of museums such as the Dallas Museum of Art, TX and the Victoria
Albert Museum, London.
She lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

A Little of This and a Little of That, 2022

Measures: 36 x 48 x 20.25 inches

Misha Kahn has emerged as one of the leading creative voices of his generation. Through a wildly imaginative approach that embraces spontaneity and non-conformity, Kahn allows the illogical and the irreverent to take over his entire process. He employs everything from lo-fi and ad hoc techniques—such as improvisational molds and collage—to high-tech tools such as virtual reality and robotics.
Born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1989, Kahn graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Furniture Design. Soon after, he gained recognition when he was featured in the Museum of Arts and Design's Biennial (2014).
Unafraid to push boundaries, Kahn is determined to question the accepted way of doing things, driving him to self-invent, adapt, and further processes in a myriad of mediums including metalwork, glass, wood, textiles, ceramic, bronze casting, fiberglass, and cement. Voracious to upend traditional techniques, he embraces the opportunity to learn from masters in their respective crafts. Kahn’s acclaimed woven Scrappy series (since 2015), is the result of a collaboration with Gone Rural, a female group...

Aroosh and Nitush Mahipal, the creative minds behind Nitush-Aroosh, were born and raised in New Delhi, India, amidst a vibrant cultural and artistic milieu. Their parents instilled in them a love of beauty and creativity from a young age, and they were fortunate to travel extensively to different parts of the world, where they were exposed to diverse forms of art, design, and architecture. From childhood, Aroosh and Nitush were captivated by the stainless steel available at their family’s factory, spending countless hours creating their toys and honing their skills. This fascination laid the foundation for their future design and art endeavors, eventually leading to the birth of Nitush-Aroosh.
The Mahipal brothers use innovative techniques to create a crumbled effect on stainless steel, resulting in sculptural pieces that appear to be made of a different material altogether. Their sculptural objects, including furniture, lights, sculptures, and wall installations, are carefully crafted to invite the viewers to embark on self-discovery and introspection.

Christine Kalia is a design studio exploring modes of spatial relations between architectural, interior and product design. The studio’s vision is calibrated towards ecocentric design and contemporary aesthetics; where the end products manifest the prime materials. The various collections take different approaches to this design mode, often seen as sitting in-between reality and daydreaming. The “coming from” of each design’s unique materiality is carefully crafted towards a “belonging with”, where the sophisticated design of the studio’s products is complementing any environment, in order to elevate its aesthetic aura.
