About the Item

Pair of 1960s Carved Hardwood African Ghanaian Tribal Benches A unique pair of 1960s Carved Hardwood African Ghanaian Tribal Benches, each a testament to traditional Ghanaian craftsmanship. These carved wood stools showcase the classic Ghanaian form, featuring upcurved seats supported by organically carved bases atop rectangular stepped platforms. Crafted by the Asante people, these ceremonial stools were specifically reserved for chiefs and esteemed officeholders, symbolizing cultural significance. Notably, the bench to the left exhibits a central carving beneath the seat in the form of the revered adinkra symbol known as "gye nyame," signifying the 'supremacy of god.' Measuring 22.5 inches in width and 16.5 inches in height, with a seat height of 13.25 inches and 13.5 inches in depth, each bench is a work of cultural heritage and artistry. These pieces are not just artifacts; they're functional, ready to be placed and appreciated for their historical and aesthetic value, highlighting the rich traditions of Ghanaian craftsmanship.
