About the Item

PP589 Bar Bench / Coffee Table, Hans J Wegner, PP Møbler, post 1990 Natural solid ash wood bench or coffee table with open slatted construction. Designed in 1953 by Hans J Wegner for the hallway of his own home, the JH589 Bar Bench represents a distilled expression of his architectural approach to furniture design. Structure, proportion and material honesty define the piece, resulting in an object that is both sculptural and functional. Originally produced by Johannes Hansen, the model was later reintroduced by PP Møbler to preserve Wegner’s most complex and demanding designs at the highest level of Danish cabinetmaking. This example is executed in solid ash wood and shows the characteristic open slatted top, with individually shaped lamellas that create rhythm, depth and a refined play of light and shadow. The softened edges, rounded terminations and precise joinery visible in the photos underline the exceptional craftsmanship for which PP Møbler is renowned. The construction appears light and floating, yet remains structurally precise and robust. The JH589 functions seamlessly as a bench or as a coffee table and can also be used as a practical surface in a hallway or at the foot of a bed. Its calm, understated presence allows it to integrate effortlessly into both Scandinavian modern interiors and contemporary architectural spaces. This piece is signed and numbered and bears the original PP Møbler stamp, confirming its authenticity as an officially produced and fully authorized edition. The model is included in the permanent collections of major international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, underlining its lasting cultural and design significance.
