About the Item

Vintage Rare Robert Thompson “Mouseman” Adzed Oak Double Settle Panelled Bench A rare and highly desirable vintage oak double settle by Robert Thompson of Kilburn, Yorkshire, widely regarded as one of the most important figures of the Arts Crafts and English vernacular furniture tradition. This substantial piece showcases Thompson’s unmistakable adzed oak construction, celebrated for its tactile surface, visible tool marks and enduring craftsmanship. The settle features a high, panelled back with twin enclosed seat compartments divided by a central upright, creating a striking and architectural silhouette. The solid oak panels display rich grain and depth of colour, while the thick plank sides and seat boards exemplify Thompson’s commitment to honest materials and traditional joinery. The adzed surfaces retain their crisp texture throughout, giving the piece strong visual presence and warmth. Designed as a double settle, this piece comfortably accommodates two, making it ideal for a hall, kitchen, inglenook fireplace or country house interior. The proportions are generous yet practical, and the seat height remains comfortable for everyday use. As expected, the oak has developed a deep, mellow patina over time, enhancing its authenticity and appeal. This is a genuinely scarce example of Mouseman seating furniture, offering collectors and interiors a chance to acquire an iconic and investment-worthy piece of British craftsmanship.
