About the Item
An antique French boudoir chair from the Louis-Philippe period, circa 1830s, distinguished by its softly rounded, fully upholstered form and intimate scale. Designed for comfort rather than formality, this type of seating was intended for private rooms — bedrooms, dressing rooms, and salons — where ease and informality were paramount.
The generous seat and enveloping back reflect the Louis-Philippe emphasis on domestic comfort, marking a departure from earlier, more ceremonial French furniture. The proportions are balanced and inviting, characteristic of early nineteenth-century French boudoir chairs.
The chair has been reupholstered in a rare archive floral fabric by Colefax, chosen for its depth of pattern, tactile quality, and sympathetic dialogue with the antique frame. Although the fabric is a later archival textile, its historic sensibility complements the chair’s original character without pastiche.
Finished with a skirted base and tailored upholstery, the piece allows the fabric to take visual precedence, in keeping with French decorative traditions. As a unique marriage of an early nineteenth-century French frame and a rare Colefax archive textile, this chair is a true one-of-a-kind piece, well suited to bedrooms, dressing rooms, or richly layered decorative interiors.
