About the Item

An exceptional and rare antique English later Victorian chinoiserie three-piece wooden bergere cane suite, circa 1885, in excellent antique condition. The suite is comprised of a three-seat settee with two matching armchairs and is constructed of top quality solid beech wood. Profuse chinoiserie detailing to the frame, arms and back of each piece. Adorned with a shaped top rail with two shell pediments, all flanked by scroll carvings, and coloured chinoiserie in floral and figural patterns The back features three cane work panels, divided by vertical splats which display spectacular, highly detailed chinoiserie scenes, in colours of gold, greens, reds and greys The elegant shaped arms with scroll ends with acanthus leaf carvings support the back, also boasting further chinoiserie, depicting figures, pagodas, mountains and a dove. The arms are joined to shaped supports, which continue the display of colourful chinoiserie. The settee frame is decorated with carvings, picked out in gold, resting on short cabriole legs with shell carvings at the knees, all sitting atop of ball-and-claw feet, which are also decorated in gold. The design and decorations on the settee are equally reflected in the armchairs, with the exception of having single top rail pediments and back splats, instead of two The suite is upholstered, this is not the original antique fabric, the frames are in the rarest of all the chinoiserie finishes, gold The suite features a firm sprung base below, which makes the settee and chairs extremely comfortable. Retaining all its original cane work, which is in excellent condition. There are no holes in the cane work, which is exceptionally rare for a suite of this type and age. The suite is in superb condition, there is usage patina to the arms, as well as some minor wear to the paintwork, and small areas where some of the chinoiserie has worked away over the decades One of the chairs suffered a split to one leg during its life and was sympathetically repaired and is solid and sturdy. Two small cornices which were joined to the feet by dowel are missing, these are both very small and one is not noticeable as it is to the rear of the foot.
