About the Item
Design elements of this 19th century square-back, newly reupholstered armchair relate to the larger bergère "à oreilles" (with ears) within which the sitter is enclosed by upholstered arms topped with “wings.” Developed to be placed in front of a fire, its particular shape is meant to keep the sitter warm by protecting them from chilling drafts. This particular chair has hand carved wooden furniture with Louis XVI style neoclassical architectural and floral detailing, and stands on fluted legs. The grey-green color of the wood is sometimes referred to as "gris trianon" - having a connection to the interior decoration scheme of the Trianon Estate built in the 1600s near the Palace of Versailles. The chair has been professionally reupholstered with modern, easy to clean fabric, making this a both decorative and practical element for any interior.
