About the Item

Pair French Louis XVI style dining side chairs from Paris decorated with timeless classical styling and hand carved excellence on the entire framework, emphasizing typical neoclassical gilt carvings of acanthus leaves and laurel wreaths, circa 1920s. Having a fine parcel-gilt and paint decorated finish, these beautiful French side chairs feature medallion shaped backrests with an intricately carved ribbon and reed motif, the cresting carved with a quiver of arrows crossed with a flambeau (the royal symbols of Louis XVI) joined together by a bow tied ribbon and laurel leaves. The acanthus motif remains prominent throughout with leaves boldly carved into the gilded stiles raising the ovular backs and the capitals of each leg. The rounded seat rails carved with guilloché, standing on twisted tapering and stop-fluted legs with a laurel leaf rosette and terminating in toupie feet. The original cane of one chair its in perfect condition . Very sturdy chairs with good, generous proportions. The flaming torch is an ancient symbol of life, truth, and the regenerative power of fire while the quiver of arrows signifies the ability to use force in the pursuit of justice. By using these symbols from the past, Louis XVI was making a conscious choice to ally himself with their powerful meanings. AVAILABLE MATCHING TABLE.
