About the Item

Elegant Louis XV period settee, circa 1750–1770, carved and waxed beechwood, newly upholstered “in the white” with natural linen. The triple-arched backrest, serpentine seat rail and cabriole legs are finely carved with floral and foliate motifs. The piece displays the graceful proportions and lightness characteristic of mid-18th-century French craftsmanship. Fully restored structure with its original pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, visible at the back. Traditional upholstery redone with webbing and horsehair, covered in plain linen ready for the final fabric of choice. Several construction details confirm its 18th-century authenticity: hand-carved decorations with slight asymmetry, traditional joinery entirely pegged rather than dowelled, refined curving lines, and a naturally aged beechwood patina consistent with period furniture. These features clearly set it apart from 19th-century reproductions, which usually show repetitive carving, simplified construction, and artificial finishes. A genuine Louis XV period settee — elegant, balanced and timeless — embodying the charm of French provincial artistry.
