Your friends are about to be GREEN with ENVY when they see your new vintage Eames for Herman Miller Arm Shell Chair!!! Charles and Ray Eames, iconic husband and wife design team, designed the molded fiberglass chair in 1948 for the International Competition of Low-Cost Furniture Design held by the Museum of Modern Art. Production began in 1950 by Zenith Plastics for Herman Miller and the chairs were offered for sale that year. That same year the Museum of Modern Art placed it in its permanent collection. The design has maintained its popularity over the years and remains one of, if not THE most popular Eames designs in existence! This is a magnificent example of the arm shell chair designed by the famed Eames duo for Herman Miller. It is beautifully composed of a sultry black molded fiberglass shell wearing a gorgeous green Naugahyde upholstery w/a sexy but subtle black edge trim. It has a flat edge, a galvanized H base w/swivel feet, smaller diameter shock mounts w/no center washer, indicating this chair is of the 4th Generation (1959-1993) … and it bears a tag under the seat dated November 16th, 1971. It will be absolutely FABULOUS in any room you choose whether in a corner of your bedroom, a dressing area, used as extra seating in the family room, or in the entry for an oh-so-stylish place to sit remove your shoes. Some may call it an “anywhere chair!” We think you need to call it “YOUR chair!” If you have been searching for that “just right” piece of iconic vintage furniture… you just found it!! Charles Eames was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1907. Ray Kaiser Eames was born in Sacramento, California in 1912. They met at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and were married in 1941. They moved together to California and continued their design work they began together at Cranbrook. A commission, which they acquired from the government during WWII to produce molded plywood splints and stretchers, launched a career producing iconic mid-century modern furnishings which are still fresh and sought after today. The Eames and their association with Herman Miller were the partnership of the century. If you want to learn more about Charles and Ray please visit Eames Office, the Eames Official website. Herman Miller started life as Star furniture Co. in Zeeland, Michigan in 1905, a producer of high-quality furniture. In 1919 it became Michigan Star Furniture Co, and then in 1923, when long time employee Dirk Jan De Pree and his father-in-law purchased 51% of the company stock, it was renamed Herman Miller Furniture Company. And remained so until the 1960s when it became Herman Miller, Inc. Until the 1930s they produced only traditional wood furniture, but the Great Depression caused a need for change, and they hired modernist Gilbert Rohde who took the company in a successful new direction. Upon Rohde’s death in 1944 he was replaced by none other than the renowned George Nelson. Working with the likes of not only Charles and Ray Eames but Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Girard, and Robert Propst, to name just a few, Nelson led Herman Miller to became one of the finest names in furniture and design. Charles and Ray Eames had a vision of making a better world. One in which things were designed to bring pleasure into our lives. This marvelous example of their work is sure to bring you that pleasure! We know you want this incredible piece of furniture design history… the choice is easy… Make it YOURS!!! Eames Molded Fiberglass Armchair for Herman Miller "Seafoam Green"' Arguably one of the 20th century’s most beloved designs, the Eames Shell chairs remain a sought after design classic nearly 55 years later. The molded fiberglass chairs are the result of Charles and Ray’s 6 years of experimenting with molded plywood to create a single shell form. Unable to successfully create the single shell with molded plywood at the time, Charles & Ray saw an opportunity to fulfill their vision using a new material: fiberglass. Charles Eames famously said, “The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.” The Molded Shell Chairs...
