About the Item

This elegant antique chaise de fumeur (smoking chair) was carved in France, circa 1880. Built of solid oak, the petite chair stands on turned barley twist legs and features a richly sculpted openwork back with intricate foliate and vine carvings centered by a fluted urn motif. The graceful silhouette is complemented by a curved seat and top armrest, both newly upholstered in smooth tan leather and finished with brass nailhead trim. Chairs of this type were originally designed for gentlemen’s salons, allowing aristocrats to enjoy cigars or pipes in comfort and style. The piece remains sturdy and well-balanced, with a warm dark walnut patina that highlights the depth of the carving. The condition is excellent commensurate with age and use. An exceptional addition to a study, office, or library. Measures: 18.5" W x 17.5" D x 30.5" H.
