About the Item

A late 18th-early 19th century black lacquered elm Chinese hat chair. Intricate carvings of traditional Chinese motif decorate the back splat of the chair, with graceful serpentine-like curves adorning the arm and back. Raised on an apron framed front legs, united by stretchers. Displaying a rich patina throughout with sympathetic wear to the original lacquered finish. Measures: Height - 112cm Width - 68cm.

A remarkable design - quintessentially Chinese and of monumental proportions. Should have been a chair for someone important. The design rooted in the Ming-style from several hundred years before this chair was created - showing straight and strict proportions combined with sculptural and flowing shapes all hand carved from solid wood. Remarkable to see a chair this 'boxy' could be so sculptural and dynamic in appearance. Also, this chair is quite comfortable to sit in.
