About the Item

19th Century Shaker Child's Ladder Back Armchair, circa 1870, an antique child's ladder back armchair with the elongated turned knob finial characteristic of the chairs made by the Shakers in the New Lebanon, New York community. The chair is made of turned hardwood with shaved wooden splints woven for the seat. The chair is all original and remains in very good condition with a lovely, deep warm patina. Measures: 24-3/4 in H x 14 in W x 10 in Deep The industrious Shakers made chairs in many of their communities, particularly at New Lebanon, NY, Enfield, CT and Canterbury, NH. The long history of manufacturing along the Connecticut River Valley inspired the Shakers in that region and New Lebanon quickly became the center for their chair making. Their high quality and pleasing designs proved extremely popular and widely inspired many other craftsmen outside their villages. The Shakers were making chairs since the late 18th Century, and when modern mass production techniques were developed by 1867 the New Lebanon community quickly stepped up their chair making volume to meet demand.
