About the Item

Afra Tobia Scarpa Monk Chair for Molteni, 1970s – Walnut Canvas A true icon of Italian modern design, the Monk chair was conceived in the 1970s by the renowned duo Afra Tobia Scarpa for Molteni. This model is celebrated for its refined simplicity, architectural clarity, and the extraordinary balance between structure and comfort. The chair features a solid walnut frame composed of two identical trestle-like supports connected by sculptural burnished-steel hubs—an elegant detail that highlights the Scarpas’ mastery of material combinations. The seat and backrest are made from two shaped canvas panels designed to provide natural ergonomic comfort. The warm tones of the walnut wood complement the tactile texture of the original canvas, creating a harmonious and timeless aesthetic. The canvas is original and in good vintage condition, with minor discoloration and small marks consistent with age—subtle signs that attest to over 50 years of life and contribute to the chair’s authentic character. Structurally sound and visually striking, this piece has been carefully restored in our atelier, preserving its integrity while maintaining the charm of its patina. A highlight in the history of Italian design, the Monk chair is documented in Giuliana Gramigna, Repertorio del Design Italiano 1950–2000, Allemandi 2011, p. 222. It also reflects themes later explored in the Scarpas’ celebrated Artonaseries, especially in the interplay of contrasting wood tones and clean construction. Afra Tobia Scarpa, active collaborators since 1957, are known worldwide for their innovative approach to materials and form. Their work is held in major museum collections, including the MoMA in New York and the Musée du Louvre in Paris. A rare and elegant collectible, this single Monk chair is ideal as an accent piece or as part of a curated interior, offering both sculptural presence and everyday usability.
