About the Item

Antique Norwegian Kubbestol (Stump chair), with Carvings, 1800s. Rare and charming Norwegian kubbestol circa 1850. These hollowed out chairs are traditionally from Sweden and Norway and made in the the 18th and 19th centuries. They are carved from a single log (kubbe) and the upper part is carved to form the backrest, and the center is hollowed out to lighten the chair. Folklore dictates that if a childs milk teeth were hidden on the inside it would keep evil spirits away. This chair has a beautiful ribbon around the middle and carvings on the back. The wood has a wonderful grey weathered aptina. A decorative hand crafted piece of Scandinavian folk art. Original condition with beautiful patina consistent with age and use. Several older reinforcements around the cracks.
