About the Item

Original ART DECO Model 222 Stacking Chairs (Set of 4) Robert Mallet Stevens (French) Design: 1928 (circa: 1940’s/early 1950’s) Lacquered raw steel w/ French Chambray upholstery Some mottled tarnishing under the lacquer creates amazing Patina / Purchased at Clignancourt (Paris Flea Market), Paris, France Robert Mallet-Stevens (1886–1945) was a French Modernist architect and designer known for his clean, geometric architecture and early interest in film. His prominent works include the houses on the Rue Mallet-Stevens in Paris and the Villa Noailles, both characterized by their lack of ornamentation and emphasis on functionality. He was also a pioneer in set design, creating acclaimed work for the 1924 silent film "L'Inhumaine". Robert Mallet-Stevens believed that furniture should satisfy the demands of contemporary living with simplicity. The design for the 222 Chair was originally conceived for his kitchen at the Villa Cavrois. Made of tubular steel and characterized by simple lines with right angles counterpoint to the curves, these chairs were made to be stackable in order to reduce space.
