About the Item

Foreign Bodies is a collection inspired by the satellites, orbiters, and rovers sent into space to analyze the material composition of extraterrestrial bodies. How we understand and use these foreign materials will help expand our presence within our solar system and eventually the universe. The process of space exploration exemplifies our dependence on materials as a species and how much influence they have over our consciousness. This light is the second piece in the second collection of objects within 'Foreign Bodies'. Inspired by space exploration and the influence extra- terrestrial materials will have upon humanity during our inevitable expanse in the solar system. This second phase of the ongoing series focuses on the ARRIVAL stage. When our terrestrial objects make contact with the foreign. Beginning our symbiotic relationship with these celestial bodies. This light takes inspiration from the rovers and robots sent to extraterrestrial bodies, Sampling and studying the alien materials to be using in out expanse. Designer Description: Collin Townsend Velkoff is a multidisciplinary artist and designer from the United States whose work is heavily influenced by material experimentation and takes cues from science fiction, archeology, and architecture. His diverse practice explores the combination of industrial methodologies and materials with organic form languages. Velkoff’s practice investigates the fluidity and malleability of function as he attempts to generate narratives through the creation of unique objects. His wide range of experience with materials and their process culminates in the development of new methodologies of creation. Research, experimentation, and the physical connection with materials is at the heart of his practice. Where every object is created by hand in his studio in Germany. He received his bachelors from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and his Masters from Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland.

Floor Standing Mirrors, Foreign Bodies - Arrival STYX - by Collin Velkoff
By Collin Velkoff
Located in Amsterdam, NL
This Mirror is the continuation of the Second Phase of Foreign Bodies entitled ‘Arrival’. This phase takes its name and inspiration from asteroids, moons, and celestial bodies within our solar system. The mirror is not intended to be a pristine mirror, but a mirror that slightly distorts the image from a distance, and the closer the view gets to the mirror the more in focus the reflection becomes. That is why instead of using a traditional mirror...
